Sony Xperia go finally received Jelly Bean update and it is now available in Malaysia. As I am Xperia go user, of course there will be a Xperia go Jelly Bean review.

The Xperia go Jelly Bean update was announced few days ago, and Malaysia was lucky that getting the update.

User Interface

Android Jelly Bean makes Xperia go changed and improved a lot.

-Xperia go lockscreen had change after updated to Jelly Bean.

Not only the lock screen had changed, the user interface also improve a lot from ICS, it is smoother than ICS, thanks to 'Project Butter'. The Jelly Bean update also brings 3D animation on Xperia go home screen and you can customize it up to 7 home pages.

-Xperia go home screen can customize up to 7 home pages, it also bring some 3D animation.

-There's also some changed on Apps Drawer, Phone call, and Messanging User Interface.

The notification bar comes with connectivity toggles - Sound, Bluetooth, WiFi, Mobile Data and Settings. You can also expand your notification that you received.

Camera and Media Apps

The Media Apps have also updated and brought some improvements and changes. The camera capture speed is now a bit faster.

-The Media Apps - Walkman, Album and Movie had updated with some improvement.

Here are some camera samples that I shoot after updated to Jelly Bean:

Additional Features

After updated to Android Jelly Bean, Xperia go comes with some features such as Google Now, Stamina Mode battery saver, etc. The recent apps interface had also improve a lot. There's also Clear Audio + too.

-Unfortunately, I did not screenshot the Google Now interface, it is similar to others Android Jelly Bean devices.

The battery life of Xperia go in Android Jelly Bean had improved, thanks to the STAMINA Mode power management.

Excellent review. However we also would like to know how is the speed compared to ICS?
Can I jump flash from GB to JB?
Thanks.

Reply

Thanks, the video speed comparision between ICS and Jelly Bean is coming soon. You must update from GB to ICS then only can update to JB. If you let Sony Service Centre update, it's take about 2 hours to update from GB to JB.

Hi, how can i update my xperia go ics to jellybean? PC Companion seems to say that my software is up to date but it is only in the ics phase.

Reply

May I know which country you come from? Currently I know Malaysia have received the update, if you can't update it means that your country still haven't receive update, as the update is rolling out now, some country will be late. Try to go Sony Service Centre and ask for update.

I am from Malaysia, Selangor but it says my software is up to date when it is only in the ics phase. So, any idea how to update?

I suggest you go to Sony Service Centre and ask for update, or maybe you need to wait as the update is rolling out for certain phone. Anyway please go to Sony Servioce Centre update.

For the bluetooth problem I think is your phone problem, try to factory reset and see whether can work or not, if can't please go for Sony Service Centre and ask for help.

Hi...does the JB update make the phone hang like it did in the ICS update...??and is is worth going for the JB update in terms of lagging

Reply

Hi, yes, it is worth to update to jelly bean as the phone got smoother thanks for Project Butter. Xperia go will still hang a bit but don't worry, it will respond quickly. Make sure you use your phone wisely, the battery life has also improved, thanks for stamina mode. After update to jelly bean, Xperia go improved a lot from ics.

Hi author, it was a great review of jellybean update. I'm a xperia go user, but my phone still remains with gb because most of the comments i read that battery life sucks with ics updates of xgo. can i have your opinion regarding battery life of the new jb update? thanks in advance :)

Reply

Hi, thanks for your praise. Xperia go battery life in GB really better than ICS, ICS will drain your battery quickly even in your standby mode. After update to Jelly Bean, battery life get improve a lot from ICS, thanks for STAMINA Mode. My opinion is, GB and JB both have their advantage, both battery life are better than ICS. Standby time JB is longer than GB but use time GB got better than JB little bit. So, it your choice whether stay in GB or update to JB. Battery life also depend how you use your phone and many factor. Are you moderate user? If yes update to JB is ok for you. In my opinion, I'll update to JB because the camera feature Scene Recognization (GB doesn't have it). 2nd, the media apps have also updated with better experience. 3rd, there's also nice themes on it in JB. 4th, the lockscreen have changed better. Of course, there are much more factor that I update to JB. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, well i use my phone for texting and listening music, playing games may do also but only when i'm bored. Jelly bean interface is undeniably greater than Gingerbread. But right now im trying to conduct a survey with my GB, i charged it to a 100% and let it standby, wondering how long could it take before the battery gets low. With what i saw with this review, this is the reason why i want to upgrade my phone. Can you rate Jelly bean with a scale of ten? and Gingerbread too, also with a scale of ten. And why can't i view the video? it says its private. I want to watch it.

PS
I liked your page already :)

Reply

For me JB will still see some delay add the homescreen, my rate is 8/10. While GB is very smooth but not as much features as JB, so my rate is 7/10. The video problem I'll solve it as soon as possible.

Reply

Hey, the video problem have solved. You can now watch it. Enjoy!

Thanks a lot! Your video have everything i want to see with jelly bean interface. This is totally an excellent review and keep it up :) I'm halfway through with my survey, and i'm planning to just back up my important sms, back up my files and then voila! update to JB! Thanks a lot sir charles, more power :)

Thanks for support! I'll keep doing best. Actually I was finding someone to sponsor review unit for doing more smartphone review. Hope someone can sponsor so that I can do more review.

Reply

Do you mean you can open Album apps? Try to backup and reset your phone and see whether it works or not. If you try many ways still can't solve, I think you should go ask Sony for solution.

Good day sir charles! experienced any bugs with jelly bean? and what are some irritating things you encountered since updating to jb?

Reply

does it fix the app cant move to ext_sd card???

Reply

The app can't move to microSD card, but you can move to internal storage.

Reply

I experience some lagging on homescreen and while you are using an app long time, when you back to homescreen, it will take a few seconds to load those icons and widgets.

Reply

Just 1 reason....
Why should i not upgrade to JB..

Reply

Hi, if your Xperia go currently running on Android 4.0 ICS, I'll recommend you to update to JB.

The disadvantage of Android JB is I experience some lagging on home screen and while you are using an app long time, when you back to home screen, it will take a few seconds to load those icons and widgets. In my opinion, Xperia go update to JB is better because it will come with some improvement.

Hello,
this is a great report of this update.
How much free RAM is for using after update to JB? Is it enough for opening a few applications?
Thx for reply.

Reply

Hi, the free RAM unchanged from ICS and GB. It still remain 389 MB free but mostly it will be only 280 MB free. It is enough to open few applications but performance not very fast.

Reply

Hi I hv wifi problem after upgrade to JB. How to rectify it? Thank you.

Reply

Thx for reply.
Last thing: how works the GPS without assistance with mobile data? It has some improvement from GB - the time to "fixation" satellites (cold start)?

Reply

Hi, sorry that I'm not sure the answer because I didn't use GPS with my phone, you can try to ask Sony Mobile My on Facebook.

Reply

Can you tell me what problem you face? So that I can tell you the solution.

Hi,

Upgraded my Go to JB, but the battery life is terrible even with stamina mode. Bought it last August, the battery life was fantastic, and after all these upgrades, I have to charge at least once a day, and even when I'm sleeping the battery drains 15% (I killed all the apps before sleeping).

Is there a way to disable some apps like Google Play or Maps or Youtube cos these come on even when I'm not using the phone? Or any other way to extend battery life? If I stare at the screen long enough, I can actually see it decreasing...

Thanks!

Reply

I recommend you to factory reset your phone, and if you turn off your phone while sleeping everyday will increase your phone capacity. This is what I did and yesterday I try the test and my phone only drop 3% while I'm sleeping.

Reply

ah, ok, i'll try... now i put my phone to airplane mode at intervals to conserve battery...

Reply

i'm a bit confused whether can i update directly through pc companion or shall i go to service centre.i mean will there be any probs by doing at home

Reply

It is less chance to face problem when update by yourself, if got problem you can claim warranty. If you feel unsafe go to service centre, my phone is update by service centre.

Reply

hi.
my notification light doesn't work in jelly bean.. :(

How to move the apps to sd card like gb in jb

Reply

You can fix the update via PC Companion.

Reply

You can factory reset your phone and try again, if can't, you need to fix it via PC Companion.

Reply

I don't think the apps can move SD card, you can only move to internal storage.

Nice review, Charles!!
And for the album not loading., you can follow these steps..
Goto settings-> apps-> swipe right till you get all apps-> select album-> clear cache and data!
Now the album will load properly! :-)

Should I update from GB to JB ? Or stick to GB ?

Reply

Hey, I recommend you not to update your phone to JB if you want your phone very smooth. After update to jb, although it is better than ICS, but it still will lag.

If you want experience Sony media apps and refreshed UI, I recommend you update to JB.

Reply

Thanx for your reply. But I already update to JB, having some problems related to Music Player, the phone even started freezing a lot. Kindly reply as to how can I go back GB ??

Reply

Hey, you can try go to settings > apps > Walkman and click clear cache. You can also try factory reset your phone. If these steps can't fix your problems, you can fix the update via PC Companion.

Unfortunately, if you want downgrade your phone, you need to root your Xperia go.

Reply

Thanks for the review and all the comments guys, really helpful.

Unfortunately I have the same problems; battery life is terrible and apps are laggy... been chasing my tail on some task manager apps trying to manage this crap ...

So I'm on JB and it looks good, but I'd rather have a phone with decent battery life and performance. To me it seems the GO was not built for later versions.

Bottom line, I understand I have to root my phone to go back to GB?
what will I really lose? I mean think about the necessities like turn-by-turn navigation, calling, walkman, apps, etc. ? forget about look and feel .. you know what I mean?

Pulled this phone new out the box 2 days ago with ICS loaded :(

Cheers,
Vincent

Hi, thanks for your comment. I have face some problems such as battery charging speed become very slow sometime, Sony said that it maybe is software problem. My battery life are good, especially standby. To solve the lagging and answering phone calls problems, I have uninstalled a lot of apps. Try not to install many apps. Xperia go is not suit for multitasking, I do prefer GB also.
