Besides the Alcatel OneTouch Idol X+, Alcatel OneTouch has also launched the Idol Alpha in Malaysia last month. The Idol Alpha is a mid-ranger but with extraordinary design, the translucent edges on top and below the device is one of its design features, though Sony has already used it for the Xperia S.

Unboxing
The retail package of the Alcatel OneTouch Idol X+ is quite special, we feel that it looks like the biscuit tin. Inside the box there's an Idol Alpha, quick user guide, microUSB cable, AC adapter, 3.5 mm jack adapter and earphone.

Design
You probable will be fall in love with the Idol Alpha design. The device is built by aluminium metal and even the frame. It is just at 7.5 mm slim and 117.4 g light, which gives you a good handling.
One noticeable nice design is the translucent edges on top and bottom of the device. The top one acts as notifications light while the bottom one is just to preview the navigation buttons.
Surprisingly the Idol Alpha doesn't have 3.5 mm headphone jack, but there's a adapter that connect to the microUSB port.
The volume rocker and power button are at the right side, while the microUSB port is at the left side. At the back there's a 13 MP camera with LED flash and speaker.
Display
The Idol Alpha has a 4.7" IPS display with HD resolution. The display uses Black Cystal touch panel and it is covered by Dragontrail Glass with Oleophobic coating.
It has a sharp display and wide viewing angle, the display has above average contrast too.
Performance
The Idol Alpha is powered by 1.2 GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589 processor backed up by PowerVR SGX 544MP GPU and 1 GB of RAM. Playing games or multitasking is quite smooth but lagging is still present due to the low efficient processor.
It scores 4,686 on Quadrant Standard and 13,725 on AnTuTu benchmark.Note that the benchmark results are just some sort of guide but not represent everything about the smartphone.
Software
The Idol Alpha is running on Andoid 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with Alcatel's UI. Alcatel hasn't provide any plan for the device to update to Android 4.4 KitKat in the future.
The user interface has two instant pages for widgets and gallery. Fortunately, Alcatel allows users to diable both pages.
Camera
The Idol Apha has a 13 MP camera at the back with LED flash. The device doesn't have much camera feature and it lacks of customization.
The photo has high amount of noise in our outdoor sample and it loses a lot details. As for the indoor sample, the camera is able to shot a lot details but the noise level are higher. In our low-light sample, not much details being captured and noise level are very high.
Battery
The Idol Alpha packs a 2,000 mAh battery and it also comes with normal battery saving mode.
The device is able to last for around 8 hours in heavy usage. One thing that impress us is the battery standby, the device can last for more than 8 days if you keep it in standby most of the time.
Pricing
The Idol Alpha is priced at RM 1,099, it has nice design and premium build material, which you don't usually find in this price tag.
Conclusion
It is a good device but the only disadvantage is the low efficient processor. Though lagging is present but it should be okay if you are not a heavy user.
Pros
- Slim body
- Light weight
- Premium build quality
- Good battery life
Cons
- Low efficient processor
- No 3.5 mm jack (though it can be done by using the adapter)
- Outdated Android version
