Qualcomm announces new Snapdragon 805 processor with Adreno 420 GPU

Qualcomm has announced the new generation Snapdragon 805 chipset with faster 2.5 GHz quad-core processor and 4K graphics. The Snapdragon 805 is able to support 4K display in addition to the 4K video recording which is already available in Snapdragon 800.

The Snapdragon 805 features a new Adreno 420 GPU, which has 40% more processing power than the previous generation Adreno 330 chips.

The Snapdragon 805 also features higher clock speed quad-core processor - 2.5 GHz and memory bandwidth of up to 25.6 GB/s. The cores have a new Krait 450 architecture but it is still a 32-bit processor.

Qualcomm has also embedded a completely new modem called Gobi 9x35. It's manufactured on a 20nm process and is smaller, more power efficient, and faster. It supports LTE Category 4, dual-band WiFi ac and even allows 4K video streaming via Wi-Fi.

The new Snapdragon 805 also has a dedicated camera processor, which will significantly increase camera speed and might even help boost image quality. It also uses the gyro sensor to stabilize the captured photos.

Qualcomm is ready to mass produce the Snapdragon 805 chipset and the first device with the Snapdragon 805 will debut in the first half of next year. No word on which manufacturers would use it first, but expect that we could see it at CES in January or MWC in February.
