Huawei Ascend G6 Review: Like a G6

Introduction
Huawei's last year flagship Ascend P6 was the company's best ever looking smartphone. Not only that, the Ascend P6 was the first smartphone to have a 5 MP front-facing camera. This year, Huawei has announced the Ascend P7 which we will review it in the future, and let's put the focus on the lower cost Ascend G6.

Unboxing

Huawei Ascend G6 retail package

The retail package is simple but special. Inside the box, you'll find the device, earphones, A/C adapter, microUSB cable, screen protector and manual guide.

Design
The Ascend G6 packs the same design language as the Ascend P6, but its rubberize back cover is removable which means there will be no slot at the any sides of the device.

Huawei Ascend G6 live photos and handling

Handling is good thanks to its 7.9 mm thin body and 115 g light weight body. Unlike the Ascend P6, the Ascend G6 has off-screen capacitive buttons below the display instead of on-screen buttons.

Display
The 4.5" qHD display has wide viewing angle and the colors are vibrant. Although it's not the sharpest in its class, but the display quality is still acceptable.

Performance
The Ascend G6 is powered by 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC with 1 GB of RAM. Just as usual Snapdragon 400 SoC never disappoint us, playing games are smooth thanks to the Adreno 305 GPU, with some hiccups though.

Huawei Ascend G6 benchmark results

It scored 8,257 on Quadrant Standard and 17,536 on AnTuTu benchmark, which is far better than other competitor with different chipset.

Software
The Ascend G6 is running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with Huawei Emotion UI Lite 2.0. The Emotion UI Lite 2.0 is almost same as the regular one but it lacks some features.

Android 4.3 Jelly Bean

You probably know that Emotion UI is way like Apple iOS. There's no apps drawer, which means all of your apps are at the homescreen.

Lockscreen | Homescreen | Theme selection

The user interface is actually same as the one when Ascend P6 launched. Unlike newer Emotion UI, you will only get four themes out of box and you can't download it.

Home panels | Adding widgets | Home settings | Simple home

You can change the homescreen transition and add widgets as well as home panels up to 9 pages. You can also switch it to simple home for convenient use.

Phone Manager

Phone manager app will scan the unwanted file in your device and you can choose to clean it.

Notification area | Quick settings

The notification area and quick settings stay unchanged, you can choose which toggles to display after you swiped down.

Camera
The Ascend G6 takes the same 8 MP camera and 5 MP front camera as the Ascend P6. The camera is also capable for 1080p video recording.

Camera interface

The camera interface is similar to the rest of the Huawei devices. It comes with 7 different modes - normal, smart, beauty, HDR, panorama, effect and sound & shot.

Camera samples

The Ascend G6 camera is decent, the noise level kept in control but the colors are a little bit washed out. The overall quality is good but it lacks of contrast. The device is able to capture the details with low noise level in macro shoots and it is able to focus the object even though the distance is pretty close. The low-light shoots surprised us with more lights being captured than usual.

Battery
Juicing up the device is a 2,000 mAh non-removable battery hough the back cover is removable. The battery use time is pretty decent when you first use it from fully charge status.

Screenshot of battery use time

However after its battery percentage drops from 100% to 99%, it will be a different story. Overall the battery life is average but don't expect the phone can last for very long in standby mode.

Final words
The Huawei Ascend G6 is priced at RM 749 for 3G version and RM 899 for LTE version. It is a nice smartphone but Huawei really need to work hard on its software side in order to compete with other devices. We didn't expect the Ascend G6 camera has such impressive image quality but it proves us wrong.

Pros
- Impressive camera
- Slim and light body
- LTE connectivity

Cons
- Emotion UI need to be improved
- Price tag is slightly high
