It seems that Sony is working on the successor of the Xperia Z1 Compact as well as the mini version of the Xperia Z2. The Sony Xperia Z2 Compact has passed through the FCC with codename "Altair" and model number (SO-04F). The model number is the Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo version of Xperia Z2 Compact.
Japanese parts retailer Moumantai has also listed what it says is the genuine back cover for the SO-04F handset. It shows the same rear camera placement as the Xperia Z1 Compact and confirms the use of a 20.7 MP Exmor RS camera sensor and G Lens.
Specs wise the Xperia Z2 Compact is expected to have the same specs as the Xperia Z2 - Snapdragon 801 SoC, 3 GB of RAM, 20.7 MP camera and IP55/58 certification.
As for the display, we expected Sony will put a larger display and battery, perhaps 4.5" but with the same 720p resolution. The Xperia Z2 Compact is also expected to use IPS panel for display despite the TFT panel from the Xperia Z1 Compact.
No word on the official announcement of the Xperia Z2 Compact but you can expect to see it in Q3 this year.
