Apple announces its financial results for Q4 of its 2014 fiscal year

Apple has just announced the company's financial results for Q4 for the fiscal of 2014. The Cupertino tech giant raked home a profit $8.5 billion or $1.42 per diluted share from $42.1 billion in revenue. . The company's gross margin for this quarter is at 38%.

The aforementioned result is an improvement over the $7.5 billion net profit from $37.5 billion for the same quarter the previous year. Gross margin for last year's quarter was 37%.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, the iPhone can be credited as the driving force behind this year' stellar financial performance. The Cupertino company had sold 39.2 million smartphones this fiscal year- that being a 4.4 million increase from the same point last year.

iOS 8.1 released and ready to be updated by the general public

Last week at its iPad showcase event, Apple announced that iOS 8.1 would be available starting today. Well the wait is over ladies and gentleman, Apple has kept its promise as the latest version of iOS is now ready to be downloaded and installed now.

For those of you who own an iOS device but do not know how to update your device manually. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. The new update should be waiting to be installed right there.

Those of you in the US with an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus would be getting Apple's new Apple Pay, which is the company's new digital wallet and payment service made possible through NFC and TouchID fingerprint sensor.

Aside from the multitude of bug fixes coming from the new iOS 8, new features for photos such as iCloud Photo Library as a beta service, a Camera Roll album and a My Photo Stream Album have been included. The Photos app will now notify you when you're running low on memory when capturing time lapse videos.

Besides that, the Messages app has not been neglected either. It now has the ability to send and receive SMS and MMS messages on their iPad or Mac through the much talked about Continuity feature.

In terms of cellular data, you are now able to choose between 2G, 3G or LTE networks. Passbook passes have also received AirDrop support. Keyboards also get a new dictation option which is seperate from Siri. Lastly, HealthKit Apps can now access data in the background.

Apple announces iPad mini 3 with TouchID functionality

Apple has just announced the third generation of its iPad mini line. For simplicity's sake, they're just calling it the iPad mini 3. The retina display just gets a mention despite being a staple of the iPad mini line. It took us awhile to come up with any notable differences the iPad mini 3 has compared to its predecessors, sadly there isn't much of a difference.

The screen size and resolution of the iPad mini 3 remains unchanged- 7.9'' and 1536 x 2048 pixels. It's not the thin, optically laminated, barely reflective screen of the iPad Air 2, instead its just the panel. This basically means that the iPad mini 3 isn't any thinner and in fact weighs the same too.

In fact this is a short run through of all the new features or changes: TouchID and Apple Pay, oh and how can we forget the model name as well. The 32 GB option has now been discontinued (which at least gives us cheaper 64 GB and 128 GB options).

iOS 8.1 to bring Apple Pay and iCloud photo library while restoring Camera Roll

Apple has only just released its iOS firmware 26 days ago, but its already working on the first update to its newest OS. According to Craig Federighi who is the Vice President of software engineering at Apple, iOS has already got a 48% installed base on all active iOS devices, making it the fastest adopted iOS update ever. On Monday, the tech giant would release iOS 8.1 to consolidate on the success of its initial release.

Federighi has said that the changed brought about in iOS 8.1 have been borne from the user feedback about iOS 8. This means that Camera Roll makes a welcome return after mysteriously disappearing in iOS 8. The update also paves the way of Apple's iPay, the NFC-based mobile payment system that will be available starting October 20. The new update also brings about the public beta of the heavily teased iCloud public library, It's supposed to allow users to store all photos and videos from all their devices on iCloud in their original format and resolution.

The iCloud will provide 5 GB of complimentary storage. Additional storage is available to be purchased, starting at 20 GB for 0.99$ a month. 200 GB is available for 3.99$ a month, with the tiers going all the way up to 1 TB.

Apple had a rough time with its mobile releases this year, including the much publicised update process for iOS 8.0.1. So hopefully the update process for iOS would go a lot smoother.

iPad Air 2 details surface ahead of October 16 event

New details regarding the iPad Air 2 have surfaced coming from trusted sources within the Apple manufacturing chain. They have revealed that the iPad Air 2 will be 0.5 mm slimmer than the original iPad Air due to the new display assembly. Considering that the iPad Air was 7.5 mm, this makes the iPad Air 2 to be just 7.0 mm thick.

In order to achieve this, the glass and display have been laminated into a single piece, just like what has been done with the last few iPhone iterations.

The thinness of the new device has caused Apple to remove the mute/vibration button. The volume rocker buttons are going to be more inset too. Companies that have been tasked with making the displays include TPK, GIS, Sharp, Samsung and LG, according to The Michael Report.

Apple Watch's Sapphire Crystal maker goes bankrupt

In a twist nobody saw coming, GT Advanced who have been tasked by Apple to make the crystal screen covers for the Apple watch has filed for bankruptcy. Specifically, GT Advanced has filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11.

GT Advanced has also provided the Sapphire for the camera covers and Touch ID fingerprint sensors in Apple's iPhone line.

This development may leave you all wondering what will happen to the impending launch of the Apple Watch. We have previously covered that the Apple Watch could be delayed slightly, arriving in February in limited quantities.

Apple Watch delayed for February

Back at its announcement event in September, Apple announced its Watch will be available early 2015, but recent events lead Rosenblatt Securities analyst Brain Blair to believe that the company is having production issues. As a result, the Apple Watch would not go into production until January 2015, at the earliest.

Due to the delay, its quite realistic to expect the Apple Watch to launch by February next year although in limited quantities. The main suppliers for the watch's components will be able to produce enough parts for about 15 million units. All of them are going to be made by Quanta, one of Apple's partners in the Watch's production.

Blair believes that if there is demand for the Apple Watch, then Apple can turn up production to about 20 to 25 million units. Apple has announced that the entry level Apple watch would cost $349, but no other pricing details have been released as of yet.

This is in conflict with long-time Apple analyst John Gruber who believes that the Watch Edition will retail for at least $1,999. The Apple Watch with stainless steel and sapphire glass is alleged to start at $999.
